Dentures

Here at Chris Bird Dental Care we understand what really makes a great smile so we can create natural, beautiful and most importantly, comfortable dentures.

The loss of your teeth can have a negative effect on your self-confidence, impact on your ability to chew food properly and also leave you with a misaligned bite. Since your teeth provide structure and support to your face and cheeks, tooth loss can result in your facial features sagging which can make you appear much older than you are. Our natural looking dentures can greatly improve the quality of a wearer’s life.

What types of dentures are there?

Acrylic resins are generally used to produce natural looking, comfortable dentures. Chrome metal bases can also be used to minimize the area of the mouth covered by the denture base and in circumstances where the force of a patient’s bite is very heavy. This is sometimes the preferred choice for discreet, lightweight partial dentures.

If you are missing all of your teeth then a complete set of upper and lower dentures is used to replace them. It may well be easier to remove one or two remaining teeth to allow a complete set of dentures to be worn. However if only a few of the teeth need replacing then in many cases your cosmetic dentist may be able to fit a partial denture/overdenture. The fitting of partial/overdentures can prevent your existing healthy teeth from moving into the gaps following tooth loss due to either decay or an accident.

How are dentures held in place?

Although some dentures are held in place by their natural suction to your gums (sometimes with the use of a fixative) they may also be attached in place with the use of dental implants. More and more patients are choosing to have dental implants to provide a denture fit that allows the wearer the confidence to tackle almost any type of food with complete confidence.

Dentures can be fitted on to existing implants; alternatively implants can be inserted prior to the construction of the dentures for patients who require the ultimate in retention, fit, and chewing ability. See separate implant information leaflets. Read more about implants.

The three grades of denture we offer are premier, superior and standard:

Premier

These custom-made dentures are realistic enough to convince even the most discerning onlooker that they are viewing natural teeth and gums. The teeth used here are made of new state-of-the-art material and are constructed on an injection moulded base yielding superior strength and comfort. The high quality teeth are available in virtually all shades, allowing our experienced technicians to accomplish the perfect shape and colour of teeth that best suits you. Natural characterisations can be made part of your custom design. Our combined background and expertise will ensure that you get new hand crafted dentures that look natural and give a near perfect fit.

These dentures also provide:

  • Improved wear resistance especially when combined with implants
  • Plaque resistance
  • Permanence of shade
  • High grinding resistance
  • Outstanding polish for an effective pearly appearance.

Superior

These very high quality dentures use denture teeth which look incredibly life-like. Skilful shading and a subtle response to changing light conditions give the teeth their remarkably natural appearance. The acrylic base is constructed using a very high impact-resistant resin; this special acrylic has up to twice the resistance to denture breakage of standard pink plastic bases. It also mimics the look of natural gums very convincingly.

Standard

This range is designed for people who still want good quality, natural looking dentures but at a more economical cost. We still use only the best materials to record very accurate measurements to help us construct the best fitting dentures for you. Detailed recording of your gum area will be taken. We also take a complete bite analysis to ensure that your new dentures are the most comfortable for your mouth.’’
